Highland Capital Management was founded in 1993 and has become one of the largest alternative investing management companies in the world. In addition to its office in Dallas, Highland Capital also has offices in Singapore, Seoul, Sao Paulo, and the city of New York.

The team at Highland Capital Management creates investment strategies that are built around 7 core types of financial assets. These assets include real estate, distressed and special situations private equity, high yield credit, healthcare, emerging markets, structured products, and long/short equities. In May 2017 they introduced a healthcare private equity fund.
